The Chicago in Ubisoft's upcoming open-world game Watch Dogs will feel like it is alive as a result of the power of next-generation consoles, according to creative director Jonathan Morin.
"Thanks to the next-gen, we can push the limits; we can make the player believe that when he does something, there are causes and consequences. I think that for the first time, players will not only be in a city, they will feel that people live in that city," Morin told Xbox Wire. "After all, every city is defined by its inhabitants."
Morin added that new technology like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 allow developers like Ubisoft to "go even further."
"For the very first time, NPCs around you are no longer robots that follow a sidewalk," Morin said. "They are real human beings with their own lives."
Ubisoft said last month that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Watch Dogs will feature fewer simultaneous onscreen characters. Though players won't get the same sense of crowd, the developer said all versions of Watch Dogs will be essentially "

Halo novelist Eric Nylund has joined Amazon Game Studios as its director of narrative design, according to his updated LinkedIn profile page.
Nylund spent 13 years at Microsoft Game Studios as its director of narrative design. At that post, he led a team of producers and designers in creating stories for the company's stable of franchises.
He is also the author of numerous Halo novels, including Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike, among others.
It is not clear what Nylund is working on at Amazon. A Facebook post captured by CouchCampus quotes Nylund as saying, "I can't talk about specifics, but I wouldn't be there unless something cool was brewing."

PopCap CEO Dave Roberts has spoken out to defend the free-to-play business model employed in his studio's latest game Plants vs. Zombies 2.
Speaking with Geekwire, Roberts said he does not agree with the notion that free-to-play games are inherently out to take advantage of gamers. Instead, he said the free-to-play model allows games to reach more people.
"We've gotten a lot of flak in the games industry for going free-to-play," Roberts said. "Everyone is: 'free-to-play is so evil.' But, part of it is, look, we can now talk to a million people in a day or two million people in a day or five million people, or whatever it is going to end up with today. That's a huge deal. People forget that freemium can really be a great thing because we are really showing a lot of people the game, and they are excited about it."
Roberts acknowledged that, like any other business model, the free-to-play business "can be flawed, or it can be great." The difference lies in execution, he said.
"With PVZ, we have a pretty important brand here and we are trying to protect it," Roberts said. "Even the old game, the PVZ game, here years later, has millions of active daily users. It is a game that people love to play over and over."
Ultimately, Roberts said Plants vs. Zombies 2 uses its free-to-play model in a way that "preserves what we believe is the great game experience and customer experience."
It's not only PopCap that believes in the free-to-play model. Roberts pointed out that paid games are not often found near the top of the highest-grossing charts on iTunes or Google Play.
"That's the sad truth," Roberts said. "People have decided that free-to-play is a better way for them to monetize. And some of the purists would argue that the industry has made them do that."

Disney spent $100 million developing Disney Infinity and creating its accompanying toys, according to people close to the company speaking with the Wall Street Journal.
That budget puts the Skylanders-style toys-to-life game on par with the cost of a major motion picture, the publication points out.
Along with the $100 million budget comes enormous pressure for the game to be a success, according to an anonymous person who recently left Disney Interactive.
"It's a Hail Mary with a tremendous amount of pressure to be a hit," this person said.

Academy Award nominee Scott Frank, who most recently wrote for The Wolverine, is rewriting the script for the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, the Hollywood veteran told Creative Screenwriting in a new interview.
"I'm rewriting Assassins Creed right now, and what I love about it is that I've never adapted a video game before and it has its own set of challenges," Frank said. "Especially in the world of rewrites, I love trying to do something completely different if I can."
Frank was nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 1998's Out of Sight, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney. He also wrote for Minority Report, Marley & Me, and Malice, among others.

Overkill Software has "a year of DLC planned" for its heist game Payday 2, which will be released across five expansion packs, game director David Goldfarb has told Joystiq.
"Payday 2--just like its predecessor Payday: The Heist--is a living thing. We have five DLCs planned together with 505 Games for the coming year," he said.
The game will be continually updated with paid and free content, "just like we did with the first game," Goldfarb added.
The designer also suggested that modding support could come to Payday 2 down the line. Goldfarb said Overkill Software would "love to add support for creating community-generated content," but nothing official is in place yet.
Payday 2 launched this week digitally and at traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. The game was
Microsoft is closing the Xbox.com PC Marketplace on August 22, the company has said, alongside the Xbox 360 update that will retire Microsoft points in favour of local currency purchases.
